This dolphin show was not as lively as the first one. The trainers were somewhat impatient and this seemed to reflect on the dolphins. The (concrete) Prehistoric Park is fun if you see the humour of it. (we did)

The next day we left for Marea del Portillo, some 220 kilometres to the west. Instead of the very bad dirt road mentioned in the Lonely Planet, someone just finished a nice smooth road on the coastline (where the tunnel was not yet finished we had to drive on the beach). The two large tourist hotels were closed due to the low season and we (fortunately) had to check into a nice small laid back hotel in Punta Piedra.Cactus It had a little beach and pigs and sheep strolling around the gardens. We planned to go to Bayamo but the ride went very fast and smooth. We decided to drive on through the Cuban plains and cycle more patiently around Trinidad.

We drove on to Ciego de Avila. The region looked very familiar (Dutch) to us with its flat green plains (only rice instead of grass) black and white cows and Dutch buses.

Glad to be on our bicycles again (really!) we cycled from Ciego de Avila to Sancti Spiritus. The famous lake Zaza had a very low water level and seemed to be empty, the hotel swimming pool in fact was empty (except for the painters on the bottom of the pool). In the afternoon we cycled to the centre of Sancti Spiritus and had some pizza for lunch. Because the hotel was 13 kilometres out of town we enjoyed our diner in style in the form of an emergency ration on the bed viewing a Star Trek movie on an American channel. Not bad when you are a Star Trek fan!
Instead of the planned day of rest (and swimming) we decided to travel on the next day.
