During this exercise we were joined by some Ecuadorians who were waiting for the bus a few hundred metres up the road. It was half past four and we still had to go 25 km to arrive in Puyo. The police car drove very fast and just before dawn we entered Puyo. We got a room in a noisy and smelly hotel, but up till now we are not really sure if maybe, just maybe we were the ones smelling most…. Workers who got
up at 5 am frequented the hotel. At 6 there was such a livelihood we
did the same. After rescuing our bicycled who were locked up so tight
no-one (yet) had a key we left heading for Banos. After two strenuous
days and we had rubber legs…..We pushed ourselves to cycle through the
military checkpoint leaving the Amazon region. After this we sat down
and waited for a truck. Robert became the hero of the day when he single-handedly
managed to get hold of an escaped horse and returned it to the owner.

We started
on our trip from Banos to Rio Bamba early in the morning. The first steep
climb went rather smoothly so we were quite happy to have recovered from
the last few days. The road was quiet and muddy. Nothing to worry about. After a few km we came to a pile of mud and a family climbing over. They told us the road was closed for cars, but it would be possible by bike. They locals all did. So we went along. After about a km the road was blocked by a landslide. We heard the volcano rumble behind us, a deep rumble of an enormous hungry bear.
