From the first moment on we automatically started to develop a new vocabulary that would get us (almost) unharmed through our journey. Upon a yelled "left", we automatically went to the left side of the road when one of us started riding on auto pilot (as you mostly do after a while). On a quiet road we almost automatically move slightly to the right side of the road, as this was the real right side for us for the last 25 years or so.

The next day we explored Chiang Mai. After having gazed at a few temples from the outside (someone was in…) we had found one that seemed empty and walked to the entrance to carefully look inside.

Wrong!! First, temples are hardly ever empty and second, don't hesitate and walk in and greet Buddha. So, at our first visit to a temple we immediately received a very special course on "how to greet your Buddha" from the head of the temple complex and his pupils, and a tour around the temple. This experience took away most of our shyness to enter temples.

The next day we left Chiang May and started cycling the beautiful countryside. The distance on our first day (with jet-leg(s)) turned out to be almost 100 km. After a good night sleep we had started cycling on a breakfast of Tom Yam Soup (which surprisingly had no effect on our early morning stomachs).

After a few days cycling through the countryside we arrived in Tha Thong, a popular town where the road ends, and a major spot in the tourist guides. Here, you have to continue the journey by boat. This place reminded us that we were not the only foreigners in this country .
