The next morning
we left for Trinidad. It seemed we finally got the hang of the Cuban
eating rituals because we sat down for pizza at 9.15 in the morning!
(we had breakfast at 6.00). Outside Trinidad we checked into a hotel
at the beach and explored the grounds. Again, there was an empty swimming
pool at an outside temperature of 35C. There was a shallow rocky beach
near the hotel. Luckily we had our bicycles and rode to a better spot
to enjoy the cool water.
We arrived in Trinidad too early in the morning for the tourist groups
and their salesman and could enjoy this beautiful city the best way
possible. Later that day we returned to the swimming spot we found the
day before. We shared it with a Cuban family who had arrived by mule
and carriage. We spent the afternoon swimming and diving to the coral.
The Cuban family insisted we should eat their mango's that had been
left over from lunch.

From
Trinidad we went to Cienfuegos and hired a car for the second time. We
drove to Havana by car over the "superhighway" (6 lanes).
At lunchtime we simply took a left on the highway and crossed the opposite
lanes to go to a restaurant on the other side. Together with the other
sporadic cars we returned to our side of the road afterwards.
We spent a few days in Havana, a nice but old city in which the grandeur
of times long gone still fills the air. Unfortunately, the city needs
to be renovated very soon or it will have to rebuild for the most part.
After Havana we cycled to the super tourist area of Varadero. Halfway
we rented a Cuban holiday house with a view over the sea, a private veranda
and a nice restaurant on the grounds. A holiday park for the "more equal"
Cubans.
